Santa Cruz Blur XC
We built up a new bike for Justin yesterday. It’s one of the new carbon Blur XCs, and it is absolutely amazing. He’s got it decked out with full XTR, some very light XTR/Stans wheels, and a nice set of Fox forks up the front. Overall weight comes in at a measly 10.16kg. Not bad for a dual suspension XC machine that feels like you can ride it hard and fast through the rough stuff without even blinking. The wonders of SC’s carbon technology and the always amazing VPP suspension platform.

Let Slip the Dogs of War
As far as I’m concerned, 5am on a Sunday is a mythical time that is only ever spoken about and very rarely witnessed. Those few times it’s experienced usually follow 4am at the pub and 4:30am at the Salamanca Bakehouse for a pie. Unfortunately John decided that we’d be off to the AusBike trade show, so I had to drag myself out of bed and bleary eyed onto a plane. Jimmy Maebus played the gracious host and drove us around, pointed out the local hot spots (“there’s a bike shop over there, there’s another one, and over there’s another one…”) and got us to the show with impeccable timing. The anime conference next door made for an entertaining wait in line, and I’m fairly sure James was sneaking off during the day to buy DVDs and costumes. Once we were in the fun started, with a veritable smorgasbord of bicycle related goods filling the room. We scurried about likes kids in the proverbial candy shop, laying eyes and hands on plenty of bling parts and tricked out bikes.
The new Shimano XTR DynaSys was on prominent display, featuring a brand new style and enough sexy to make JT envious. Around the corner SRAM’s new colour-matched groupsets were drawing eyes, as were some damn light forks and their wicked new Reverb hydraulic dropper post (with no play!). The fine lads from Adventure Brands had a swathe of awesome Jamis bikes out for show. The Xenith road bikes look amazing for 2011, and I’ll even admit to being impressed with the smooth lines of their full carbon Dakota 29ers (but I’m not converted yet). A little less fancy but still right cool are the new Jamis commuter bikes, and their excellent Reynolds 631 Aurora Elite ready-to-roll tourer. As always the Dragon Pro is the hottest looking hardtail around.
After a dash about the show we bailed out and hot-stepped it out to the fine abode of Southcott, home of Felt & Electra. The ever-obliging Gerald had laid out a beautiful selection of 2011 bikes for our enjoyment, and enjoyable it was! The new F series road bikes are looking amazing. Ultra stiff, a huge downtube, BB30 bottom bracket shells and tapered head tubes. These things are a sprinters dream, while still being light enough to impress the skinniest climbers out there. We drooled over the new AR0 with Di2 and the slickest black-on-black colour job. The new Edict ultra light weight XC dual suspension rigs are looking to blow minds this year I reckon. Just holding the frame made me feel fast. Start getting prepped for the ultimate new XC weapon.
Beer and pizza followed and after a second attack of the show we dragged ourselves back to the airport and onto a plane bound for home, weighed down with kilos of catalogues, stickers and drink bottles. Over for another year, heads filled with dreams of future projects and ‘the next bike’.
If you’ve sat and read through all of this, here are some pretty pictures for you to enjoy!
